The result is a beautiful deep intense colour that is easy to clean and will look just as good in twenty years as the day it was fired.

Behind the name

The Beaune takes its name from the commune in the Côte-d'Or department of France which is known as the wine capital of Burgundy. A notable landmark in Beaune is the Hospices de Beaune, also known as the Hôtel-Dieu, founded in 1443 by Nicolas Rolin. This historic hospital is famous for its annual wine auction and its distinctive Gothic architecture.

“Beaune” is derived from the Latinized Gaulish word “Belena,” which referred to a spring around which the settlement was established. This, in turn, is linked to “Belen” or “Belenos”, a deity who has been associated with fast-flowing water.
